Support Low Power FM Radio!

Act Now: Support LPFM Today.
http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=sxquyfFBtrOWBglZ-cPYVQ..

The window to support better radio closes at midnight tonight.
You can help create more independent, local stations and tune out the
cookie-cutter corporate programming that has dominated the dial for
decades. But to get more local radio, we need you to act now.

Tell the FCC: Local Radio Matters.
http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=AliRDiAvLHIUWjMDV1NDgw..

LPFM stations are community driven and locally oriented, providing
news and information often ignored by mainstream radio — information
crucial to healthy communities and a vibrant democracy.
The Federal Communications Commission is weighing a set of rules that
could open the nation's airwaves to hundreds of new LPFM radio
stations. These rules will determine whether our airwaves will be
reserved for local operators or used for "translators" that simply
relay commercial programming from far-off places.

The FCC needs to know that our airwaves must be set aside for local
stations and the vital information, news, music, and cultural
activities that they provide.

Act Now: Support LPFM Today.

After you take action for local radio, please then forward this e-mail
to all of your friends. http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=X2Vii7raKu7936qRU-iLBg..

With your activism, we will be one step closer to using the public
airwaves to actually serve the public.

HER has to move!

Filed under: News — Garrett Kelly @ 5:40 pm

Hollow Earth Radio has to move! Our landlord is selling our house, and we have to move by May 1st.
Do you think you could help?

Currently, our setup is this: We live in a two story home with a basement. The radio is in the basement and feels separate from our living space. This works out well for us. We like that the radio is in the same building as our home, but If you know of a public venue that doesn’t have a living space attached, we would be open to this too.

Our budget is up to $1400 a month for home/radio. If it is a home, we are open to having a roommate(s) who don’t mind people coming in and out of the house all the time to volunteer possibly late into the night.

We are really sad we have to move, but hopefully this will place us in an even more ideal situation! We have to move fast on this. And thanks to everyone who’s come out to the shows this month and put in time on the radio - it’s wonderful to know that we have all this support!

P.S. Dj Clydascope sent us this great picture of himself to help warm our hearts in this time of need:

Filed under: Uncategorized, Found Sound / Free MP3, News, Press — Garrett Kelly @ 5:14 pm

Garrett and I are releasing an album “Analog America: A Four Course Meal of Found Sound” on the noise | order label www.noiseorder.com March 11th. We are celebrating by hosting “Cabinet of Found Curiosities,” an art show & cd release party at Windows Art Gallery (Dearborn Show venue - 42nd/Woodland Ave N.) on March 7th during the Fremont Friday Art Walk.

KUOW, 94.9, our local public radio, interviewed me about our curious found sound hobby. This 13 minute story will be aired on Friday, Feb 29th at precisely 2:06pm for one of their Sound Focus stories! Tune in to hear a few sample tracks and hear me try to explain why the hell we do this sort of thing. It will be archived on their website for a short while. Hollow Earth Radio’s Obsession with Found Sound Featured in Seattle Times

Filed under: Found Sound / Free MP3, News, Press — Garrett Kelly @ 10:18 am

YEp. That’s right. Seattle Times felt it was important to tell the masses that we collect found sound from answering machine tapes we collect at thrift stores and yard sales. Read the article here. Isn’t that rad? If you happen to find tapes we would’ve gotten but you beat us to them, you should digitize them, and send them our way! We’ll air it on our radioo radioo.

Podcast now available from last nights FCC Public Hearing Workshop!

Filed under: News, Podcast — Garrett Kelly @ 12:08 pm

Despite having just five business days to prepare, community leaders from across the Northwest will travel to Seattle today to testify at the Federal Communications Commission’s final public hearing on media ownership. The hearing, which will take place from 4pm-11pm today at Town Hall Seattle, will allow members of the public a rare opportunity to weigh in on proposals that would dramatically change federal rules setting limits on consolidated media ownership. One significant proposed change would allow one media company to consolidate a town or city’s newspaper, TV and radio station under single ownership and single editorial control.

Hundreds are expected to attend the hearing, which will include opportunities for open-microphone public testimony on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information about the hearing and its schedule, visit www.reclaimthemedia.org.

Hollow Earth Radio hosted an on-air workshop and discussion about this FCC hearing last night. This workshop will re-air today at noon (PST) on Hollow Earth Radio, and is available to download here.

Thanks to Roger Fulton for cleaning up the audio and helping make this available.

FCC Hearing, Hollow Earth Radio to do on-air testimony workshop

Filed under: News — Garrett Kelly @ 4:00 pm

The Federal Communications Commission is again attempting to rewrite America’s media ownership rules. Potentially, companies could be allowed to own more TV and radio stations, giving us more commercialism, less independent journalism and music, and fewer diverse voices on the air.

The FCC will hold a public hearing on the issue at Town Hall Seattle (1119 Eighth Avenue) on Friday, November 9th, from 4-11 pm, giving you an opportunity to voice your opinion. We are holding an on-air workshop tonight at Hollow Earth Radio to help people prepare to testify during this public hearing. Nathan James, Campaign Coordinator for the Media and Democracy Coalition, will lead this workshop. Even if you don’t testify, you will also learn more about what is going on with these upcoming decisions and participate in a discussion about this hearing. Those attending, arrive at 7pm. Those listening to this on-air workshop, tune in at 7:30pm PST Thursday, tonight.
